Foam flower is a low growing woodland plant that spreads readily to form a living carpet. This graceful flower will thrive in a shaded spot with evenly moist, rich soil. It spreads to form colonies by sending out shoots, called stolons, over the top of the soil in a similar way to strawberries.

The soft, feathery flowers bloom in May to June. They provide nectar for pollinators after most spring ephemerals have faded and before many other woodland plants begin to flower. The leaves persist late in the year, and are evergreen in the southern reaches of its range. In Pittsburgh, expect leaves to hold on into the fall once established.

Because of the astringency of the leaves, foam flower will often deter rabbits and deer.

Companion Plants
Foam flower is great in a moist, shaded woodland garden alongside other shade loving plants such as wild ginger, ferns, coral bells, and spring ephemerals
